French chanson and Shakespeare’s theatre share the distinction of being truly, unquestionably “popular” art forms. Everyone knows who Romeo and Juliet are, just as everyone recognises themselves in a song.
Shakespeare in Songs: fragments of Shakespeare’s plays resurface through four actor-singers and lead them, as in a game of hopscotch, to one song or another from the French repertoire. Christophe, Mylène Farmer, France Gall, Barbara, Marie Laforêt, Michel Jonasz, Danielle Messia… so many echoes of the great playwright’s lines.
Inspired by the famous speech from Shakespeare’s As You Like It – “All the world’s a stage…” – this show blends theatre and song into a joyful patchwork.
